Rookie JR Stra ord wins Rapid City with record-se ng 93.5 Eight PRCA bull riding world championships were held by the field of bull riders for the final performance of Rodeo Rapid City (S.D.). With a 90.5-point ride holding down first place and an arena record of 93 on the books, the expecta ons were high for a spectacular night of bull riding ac on Feb. 6. As it turned out, High Expecta ons — a bull from New Fron er Rodeo — delivered on his name, thanks to the effort of an 18-year-old riding in his first season of ProRodeo compe on. Rookie JR Stra ord likely shocked the crowd inside Rushmore Plaza Civic Center when he bested the previous record held by PRCA World Champion Terry Don West, who set the record in 2003. Stra ord raised the Rapid City bull riding bar to 93.5 points. "That bull is actually located about an hour-and-a-half from my house down here in Kansas," Stra ord said with a laugh. "So I had to drive 10 hours to Rapid City to get on a bull from Kansas; but I was stoked to have him drawn. He's real fast and electric ... definitely worth the drive for sure." While new to ProRodeo, Stra ord is already a veteran of his cra , compe ng in regional associa ons against adults for years. "Anywhere they'd let me get on before I turned 18. It was good prac ce for me and got me seasoned a li le more," Stra ord said, adding that he started out riding calves at 3 years old. "I've studied it my whole life and always wanted to get be er and be er. It's my passion." Stra ord turned 18 in August and won his first ProRodeo compe on by conquering a Na onal Finals Rodeo bull — Bar T Rodeo's Twist and Shout — with an 88.5-point ride at the Jim Shoulders Living Legends Pro Rodeo in Henrye a, Okla. He went 3-for-3 in September to fill his permit. Rapid City was his fourth ProRodeo compe on and first as a rookie. Collec ng an arena record at the PRCA's reigning Large Indoor Rodeo of the Year to win his second ProRodeo already is a fantas c start to a career. As for the record, Stra ord wasn't expec ng it. "I didn't expect to be that high," Stra ord said. "I knew it would be a good score. I'm just really ckled to get the record." He picked up $4,315 for the win as well as valuable points on the ProRodeo Tour, which could help him earn a posi on at the ProRodeo Tour Finale at season's end. That is an important piece for the rookie's overall goals for the year. "I'm going to try to make the NFR; I want to be in those yellow bucking chutes," he said. "It's my ul mate dream to become a world champion." Traveling with his roommate and permit holder Bubba Greig and 17-year-old bull rider JC Ward, Stra ord plans to hit the road hard in 2021. "I'll try to go to all of them I can make ... ' l the wheels fall off," he joked while no ng the large crowd in Rapid City on the final night. "I'm glad they're le ng us rodeo. It was a packed house there in Rapid and it was pre y cool." Two other Rodeo Rapid City records fell during the 2021 edi on, including the saddle bronc riding mark which was 90.5 points, set a year ago by Shorty Garre . Cody DeMoss bested it with a 91-point ride on Su on Rodeos' Face Book. Rodeo Rapid City - Rookie JR Stratford
