rodeo National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association Finals - Casper, WY By Susan Kanode When the 65th annual College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) came to a close on June 15th, there was a confirmation for Billy Bob Brown that he was doing what he was meant to do and doing it with the right partnerships. Brown from Carbon, Texas, just finished his junior year at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas, where he is majoring in agricultural business. He is the student director for the Southwest Region and qualified for the CNFR in team roping and tie-down roping. He was the regional all-around and team roping heading champion and made the trip to Casper, Wyo., to compete for the third time. This year however, he left town with more than he came with. Brown won the team roping header and all-around championships. He also won the third round of the tiedown roping with a time of 7.7 seconds. Roping with Logan Medlin from Eastern New Mexico State University, they entered the final round tied for first place. Their times of 6.2, 6.6 and 6.8 put them in the top eight of each round. They along with Wharton County Junior College's Cody Kohleffel and Austin Santikos each had a total time of 19.6 seconds and new the championship would come down to the fourth steer. Brown and Medlin had a game plan and executed it well winning the final round with a 5.7 and the championship with a total time of 25.3. Kohleffel and Santikos failed to connect in the finals and finished in sixth place. The 290 points earned in team roping along with 80 in tie-down gave Brown 380 total points to earn the allaround championship over Joe Frost from Panhandle State University who had 220. Panhandle won the men's team title with the College of Southern Idaho finishing second and Tarleton right behind them. Brown will go back to Tarleton this fall and plans to graduate next year. Hopefully he will be back in Casper in 2014 to defend his titles. "It means a lot to get to place in more than one event," he said. "It says something about your work ethic. For it to pay off like this is the first step in what I want to do in my lifetime." While his education is a priority, he and Medlin are planning to rope together at PRCA rodeos during school breaks and making a run at the Rookie of the Year titles. Medlin, from Tatum, N.M., is following in his father's footsteps. Jeff Medlin also attended Eastern New Mexico University and qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo as a heeler. 4 2013 COLLEGE NATIONAL FINALS RODEO CHAMPIONS Bareback..................................... Their families have been a huge source of support for both of them. With 300 miles between the two families, practice times were rare, focused and purpose driven. "We rope together every chance we get," Brown said. "We went to a few pro rodeos this year and would go to each other's houses on breaks. We can't practice often, so we practice with a cause every time. We make every run to be consistent." It also helps that they are well mounted. Brown is riding a six-year-old horse he calls Harry that he bought from Trevor Brazile this year. Medlin is riding a horse that he calls Millenium. "We are blessed to have two really good horses," Brown said. "Being best friends helps a lot too. We have a lot in common, get along really well and we The WrangleR, Horse and Rodeo News • July 5 - 19, 2013 Photos by Hubbell Rodeo Photos have the same goals." Brown's goals may go a little farther than Medlin's as the college all-around title is likely one of many more to come. He won the tie-down roping and allaround championship at the ABC Rodeo in Lubbock, Texas, last spring. He is focused, goal oriented and has big plans for his future. The women's all-around title went to Hayden Segelke for the second consecutive year. She won her first title as a freshman at Northeastern Junior College and came back this year representing the same school in her signature events, barrel racing and goat tying. Segelke had a total of 465 points and helped her school earn the reserve champion women's team title. She finished third in the barrel racing and second in the goat tying. Winning the women's team championship was Idaho State University largely due to the success of freshman Kimberlyn Fehringer who finished just 20 points behind Segelke in the all-around race. Fehringer also won the breakaway roping with a total time of 9.7 seconds on four runs, over two-sseconds faster than Kaycee Nelson from the University of Wyoming who had a total time of 11.8. All of these athletes have the potential to return to Casper, Wyo., next June to defend their titles at the 66th annual College National Finals Rodeo. Competition this year was tough, but next year it could be even better.
