Behind the brand of 88 Ranch Performance Horses
are a great group of people. "We have great guys that
are training, my Sister-in-law does a fabulous job on the
day-to-day maintenance and care of the horses. We have
a great media relationship with Lisa, the vets, the whole
group. If I'm mentioning a dozen, there's two dozen more
that are always constantly behind us, helping us," Garrett
humbly shared.
This year's sale is taking on a new date in December
of 2024, happening right after the National Finals Rodeo
concludes. Hopefully, the date change will allow a great
stage and opportunity for people who are revved up
and excited about the next rodeo season, to purchase a
prospect before going into the new year. Plans are in place
to eventually move the sale to the fall, over the course of
the next few years. Garrett stated, "That sort of thing takes
time. There's so much work that goes in to get these colts
ready." Having a fall horse sale will certainly bring added
benefits to both the colt lineup, and the full team behind
them at the 88 Ranch.
One thing is for sure! Just as his father was looking for ways
to make things better, Garrett and the rest of the family are
always pushing and striving to take their operation to the
next level. That desire led to some monumental changes
for the Henry's with the recent purchase of standout
stallion, Sheik Jean Fly.
Garrett shared his quest for making a new mark in the
industry. "We have this great team of people; what's the
last thing that we can do to move the needle? I wanted to
try and find a horse that had all the eligibility in the business
that we're in with the barrel horses, and that everybody
wants. That would be a Pink Buckle horse, which is the
pinnacle of what people are seeking. Those are super
hard to find. I wanted to buy 'the best!' I don't care what
it is. If I can find the best that somebody will sell me, I'm
going to buy it!"
Garrett had a list of must-haves in his search criteria.
They needed to be a Pink Buckle stallion, successful in
the arena, proven themselves as a winner, and bred with
different bloodlines so as not to compete against other
stallions in the business for the same type. He knew that
his order was a steep one, but with the help of friends, Lee
and Hallie Hanssen, they came across Sheik Jean Fly HTT.
Originally, the horse wasn't for sale, but Lee spoke with his
owners, and within just a couple of weeks the deal was
sealed.
Garrett felt that to do justice to their program and the
people involved, this was definitely the direction that they
needed to go. In an effort to get a jump on his first foal
crop, the 88 Ranch proceeded with purchasing several
of the foals from Sheik's owners Keith Nielson and Lance
Robinson. The goal with the investment into the first foal
crop, is that it will help put the program just a little bit
farther ahead when promoting and selling his offspring.
"It's one of the last pieces to the puzzle that's going to
help take our program to where it needs to go," elaborated
Garrett. "Not that there won't be more puzzles, because
we don't want to get stagnant, we want to continue to
grow and get better, but this is certainly a huge part of the
present."
