14 • The WRANGLER • September, 2024 Crowning Crowning After the bArreL rAcers cLeAred out in rock sPrings, the roPers moved in At the sweetwAter events comPLex. Starting the week off with breakaway and calf roping, Shane Hanchey and Beau Peterson again proved their tried and true program. Peterson took home the average championship in the four and under breakaway on Aldo The Apache as well as a third place finish on Once Ya Go Boon. She also took the average win in the six and under breakaway on Ohh Its A Boon and fifth on Rollin On The River. The win with Aldo the Apache was extra special for Peterson, "He is the first horse I've fully owned, and a horse that I've shown and he's been a lot of fun." Peterson remarked, "I love the Royal Crown. They really want to show the horses at those events. You have to score and the calves at Rock Springs were a great set. You had to score your calf out there and then use your horsepower across the line. I have a lot of fun just showing those horses and what they can do." Hanchey won the six and under calf roping on DT Hickorys Zinger, fourth on CR Pepto Tuff Lena, and fifth on Mighty Fine Talker. He also clinched a second place finish for Peterson's Aldo The Apache in the four and under calf roping and a win in the all ages calf roping jackpot aboard Miss Stylish Doc. Hanchey is always ready to give credit where it is due and was catch riding both horses he won on in Rock Springs. "Dakota Kirchenschlager and Gary Wells have done such a great job with DT Hickorys Zinger. He is going to win a lot more in the next four months. Miss Stylish Doc is owned by Cooper Smith and managed by Dakota. Dakota is a horseman. I stepped on each time and the horses were ready for me." Cody McCartney and Reyal Rebel took the win in the four and under calf roping and Macie Rae Werken earned the championship in the all ages breakaway jackpot aboard FQH Chili Cat. Switching over to the team roping, Miles Baker and the unstoppable mare, Relentless PYC, claimed the four and under heading championship. Baker speaks highly of the mare, "She's so good minded. To back in and be good in the box every time and score like she does, and she has a lot of run, but she's real good strided, so I can hit the barrier every time and she's got a lot of speed to catch up. A lot of things head horses have to overcome to be good, she doesn't have to overcome those. She just checks all the boxes. She's won over $100,000 and at this point in their four year old year, they have to want to win to be able to do that. She's great in the heading, but I think she could've dominated in the barrels too. To pull the ground and get from here to there fast, that's where this mare is so good." Bobby Mote and Ichis Red Gypsy took the average championship in the four and under semi-pro heading. Luke Atchison and JJs Hollywood Star captured the four and under heeling average championship. Twenty year old Atchison always knew he wanted to rodeo and train horses. "After high school, I worked for Casey Hicks for a few months. I had known Cole Davidson for a long time. He offered me a job and let me show a bunch of horses. He is a huge help in every way. Working for him got my foot in the door with the futurities." Atchison moved back to Arkansas and began his journey. "My grandpa raises a bunch of horses. The horse I won it on is one we raised. I started her as a two year old and trained her all the way up to now. It was kind of a cool deal for the family to be able to watch her win, especially in the open there with all the big guys." The four and under semi-pro heeling championship went to Heath Williams and Queen of Sparkles. Williams hails from La Cygne, Kansas, where he works for Brad Lund, who trained the mare. "The mare excels in every event— heading, heeling, calf roping. She is one of the nicest four year olds I have had the privilege to ride. I want to thank Brad for the opportunity. He doesn't have to let me on anything and I'm just grateful to work for him and have the chance to show her. Brad has done an incredible job with her. That mare is going to be a standout no matter someone wants to do later on." Williams echoed appreciation for the Royal Crown events, "Where else can you win that kind of money on a four year old?" The six and under heading win went to Trevor Brazile and RR Buckles Clubhouse. The six and under heading semi- pro win was captured by Jimmy Tanner and Notorious H I P. Again in the six and under heeling, Trevor Brazile topped the field aboard Not White At All, with Les Oswald and Justa Smooth Cat taking the win in the six and under semi- pro heeling. The intermediate heading championship was earned by By Teal Stoll the the Royalty: Royalty: Roping Champions Roping Champions
