RAPID CITY, So. Dak., — The 18 th Annual 5-State Breeders Futurity was one for the record book! Kathy Korrell Rach and her palomino mare, Smoke N Sunshine "Shine", bested the 76 entry field - winning the first two rounds, the finals, and the average of the $20,000 added futurity. They also placed second in the Saturday night Dakota Hills Veterinary Clinic 5D and won the 1D of the Future Fortunes. The 2010 mare sired by former nominated 5-State stallion Smoke N Sparks and out of Runaway Frenchgirl by Frenchmans Guy cleared over $11,000 for the weekend. Their competition was amazingly tough. The 5-State runs on a standard pattern and the second round was impressive as the clock stopped in the 16 second range three times – with Hallie Hanssen and Overthemoonforaguy, Tasha Welsh and Guys Royal Blue Eyes, and finally with Korell-Rach. The short round of the 5-state runs from slowest to fastest average times with a fresh drag for each horse. It led to two more 16 second runs - one from Korell- Rach with a 16.799 and the other from Tami Semas on Smooth and Famous with a 16.805. Smoke N Sunshine claimed the average title and Smooth and Famous, by A Smooth Guy, took home the reserve champion beaded breast collar sponsored by Myers Training Stables. Korell- Rach also won a Shiloh saddle sponsored by Plains Horizon Equine Insurance and Black Hills Auto Sales and she and the other finalists took home Roper Coats and a Rubbermaid wheelbarrow. The 5-State stallion owners have set aside $2,000 for amateur riders who have never held a WPRA card and not won over $500 in life time futurity winnings. There is no additional entry fee. This year Ashley Worth and her 5 year old gelding Be Assured Im Famous, by the deceased stallion Roosters Fame, took home the title in the amateur average. They also won a Roper Coat and a Shiloh Shine Sweeps 5 State Breeders Futurity saddle sponsored by Tony and Betty Lantis of Sundance, WY. Both Be Assured Im Famous and Smoke N Sunshine were home raised and trained - making their championships even more meaningful for both families. $5,000 was added to the 5-State Breeders Maturity. Erin King and her beautiful 6 year old stallion, Turn Again Frenchman by Streakin Four Sixes, placed 6 th in the first round and on the second round. They walked away with a beautiful Shiloh saddle sponsored by First Interstate Bank and Thars Feed of Gillette, WY. The duo combined for over $2600 in 5-State weekend winnings. Reserve championship honors went to Tami Semas and her Frenchmans Guy gelding, Ninnekahs Guy. The reserve champion was awarded a beautiful beaded breast collar sponsored by Jodie OBryan. A $2,000 Horse Hair Analysis 2D sidepot was paid out in the Futurity and $1,000 2D sidepot from Cass Equine of Pierre, SD and Ireland Performance Horses of Box Elder, SD was paid out in the Maturity. A Champion 2D buckle sponsored by the Sampson Family Ranch went to Amanda Harris and SSPerkolatinsugar sired by Perkolatin. The champion 2D Maturity buckle sponsored by Flannery Barrel Horses was awarded to Streak Em Nick Bar and Deanna Jo Smith. Jordon Briggs of Chilton, TX was awarded the Jessie Jaymes All Around Buckle sponsored by Gary Westergren. She took top honors in the Pole Bending Futurity and was 4 th in the Barrel Futurity. The four year old sorrel mare is the reason Frenchmans Guy was crowned the All-Around Stallion. Jessie Jaymes buckles were given to the average champions of the Dakota Hills Veterinary Clinic Open 5D. They were awarded to Jana Griemsman, Stephanie Newman, Kelly Caldwell, Peggy Holzer, and Ellen Huber respectively. Buckles were sponsored by 4G Ranch Supply, Dakota Hills Veterinary Clinic, and Gary Westergren. The 5-State Breeders Futurity was created to promote the stallions in SD, ND, MT, WY, and NE. This year the added money and prizes was greater than $80,000. The crew at LI Productions would like to thank every stallion owner and every sponsor that contributed to making this weekend a success.
