2 The Wrangler, Annual Breeders Edition • January 1-31, 2017 Frenchmans Guy now has progeny with earnings exceeding 10.5 Million Dollars! In fact, in 2015 fifty percent of the nation's top 25 futurity horses had Frenchmans Guy blood close up in their bloodlines. This among other accolades has made Frenchmans Guy the Decade's #1 Leading Living Sire. Next spring "Guy" will be 30 years old. While he still looks great, Myers have decided to no longer send cooled semen out on him. They will be offering breeding through ICSI procedure using frozen semen. What is ISCI? Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is an advanced reproductive procedure that may be beneficial in selected cases in which the number of spermatozoa available is very limited. The intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) procedure involves micro- injection of a single sperm cell into the cytoplasm of a mature oocyte (egg), which physically causes fertilization. Because ICSI utilizes a single sperm cell for each oocyte, this procedure holds tremendous potential for the production of foals using semen from stallions where few straws of frozen semen exist. The injected oocyte may be transferred immediately into the oviduct of a recipient mare or may be returned to the incubator and cultured for an additional 24 to 48 hours. If the oocyte was successfully fertilized, the single-celled oocyte should cleave into two cells and then those cells should cleave again into 4 cells, etc. over the next few days. The cleaved embryo would then be surgically transferred into the oviduct of a synchronized recipient mare. The first foal produced from ICSI was born in 1996 at Colorado State University. Currently, sperm injection is only available at a few equine reproduction referral centers. The technique involves specialized equipment and requires advanced training by clinicians and/or technical staff. Since only a single sperm cell is selected and injected, ICSI can utilize very small quantities of frozen semen. This advanced reproductive technology is also beneficial for mares that are unable to become pregnant themselves (i.e., mares with chronic uterine disease, cervical lacerations, or other damage to the reproductive tract that prohibit the mare from conceiving or supporting an embryo in the uterus for any length of time). Additionally, this technique is valuable to mare owners who wish to produce offspring Frenchmans Guy 29 Years Young out of mares that are currently competing. Cost? The ISCI procedure is very similar to the cost of an embryo transfer. Additional savings can be made if you own your recipient mare. The costs also vary depending on what facility you choose to use.
