A horse sale paired with an incentive designed to boost breeding and performance of top- quality horses— that is the name of the game for the Royal Crown. It's not all races and roping. The motive is to provide substantial paybacks to stallion owners, breeders and buyers at their August 9 event in Rock Springs, Wyoming. Partners Levi and Lindsey O'Keeffe and Matt Zancanella have deep-rooted passion for the equine industry. The Royal Crown concept arose after noticing a need in their own programs and was born out of a desire to create a system that truly rewards quality and performance. Without hesitation, the team launched the Royal Crown. Through meticulous planning and a keen understanding of the market, they have succeeded in making the Royal Crown a coveted accolade among stallion owners and breeders— and they're not stopping yet. "My intentions were to sell my offspring easier. With the incentive, I could add value to them," Zancanella said. "I did it for a lot of years and it's tough to really make much money when you're raising babies." Breeders acknowledge the challenging journey from birth to sale. Without any stats and immense unproven potential, the selling points of a colt are slim. With incentives where stallions lead the charge, the future of horse sales promises to be more predictable, reliable, and rewarding for all involved. "When I first started the Royal Crown, we had 25 to 30 brood mares, and we'd usually sell broke two-year- olds. It was hard for us to sell our babies," Zancanella said. "Since the Royal Crown, people are buying our weanling colts off the mares. We're selling a lot more of them that way, which is ideal way to raise horses." For buyers, investing in a young horse involves a leap of faith. There is a significant waiting period before returns can be realized. Purchasing from the Royal Crown provides comfort because of the innovative incentives. They have a long list of proven studs paid in and new this year, the Royal Crown is introducing a $100,000 sale graduate incentive, upping the ante from $50,000 last year "The colts that go through the sale, they're eligible for the $100,000 sale graduate. Also, when they go through the sale, the colts are eligible for life," Zancanella explained. "Buyers at the Royal Crown sale don't have to worry about the stallion dropping out and they have a shot at the $100,000 sidepot." These two benefits are reason enough to place a By Lauren Fritzler Trevor Brazile on Relentless Glory at the Royal Crown in Rock Springs.
