Owning performance horses can feel overwhelming at
times, as it can be a constant battle to keep them in top
condition. New therapeutic modalities pop up constantly,
with many alternative therapies now widely available.
While some therapies have studies to support their
claims, anecdotal evidence is highly regarded by many
horse owners. While it would be impossible to fit everything
available into one article, this will be a broad overview of
the most common practices.
Bodywork
Chiropractic, massage, and other forms of bodywork
are probably the most widely known fields. While most
practitioners are certified, horse owners should always
check their credentials, as these fields are not highly
regulated in most states. Most forms of this work are done
with just the therapist's hands, but some chiropractors
utilize rubber mallets or activators.
Cranial-sacral utilizes light touch to stimulate the central
nervous system and influence alignment of the bones
of the skull, spine, and pelvis. Programs such as the
Masterson Method are based on cranial-sacral work.
Osteopathy is much more in-depth, aiming to restore
homeostasis by addressing joints, muscles, ligaments,
and organs. It recognizes the body's inherent self-healing
capabilities and looks at the whole body, inside and out.
Osteopaths undergo a very lengthy educational and
training process.
Acupuncture
With roots in ancient Chinese medicine, acupuncture
